WHAT TO VISIT
The richness of the city and its surrounds offer the chance to discover the art and history
found within and without the
city walls and throughout the outdoors
or in the surroundings of the town or
in all of Upper Tiber Valley.
The Museum itinerary , includes the visit of many museums, and it allows the visitor
to uncover the historic masters of art . A few of whom are Raphael, Luca, Signorelli and
even
Alberto Burri.
The renaissance itinerary should include the elegant
Vitelli Palace,
the historical centre, which is a museum itself, with the 10th-11th century
cylindrical bell-tower , or “campanile”,
the Civic Tower
from 14th century and the Palace of Podestà,
hich is attributed Angelo da Orvieto. Also within the main square is the stunning baroque façade of the
Commune Palace or Palazzo dei Priori
and associated buildings, the work of Angelo da Orvieto. This large area so full of beautiful architecture is composed of the
Matteotti Square and
Gabriotti Square, which are known, respectively,
as the upper square “Piazza de’ Sopra” and lower square “Piazza de’ Sotto”.
The religious itinerary contains many historic churches such as the
Duomo (cathedral),
San Francesco,
Madonna delle Grazie,
The Convent of Santa Veronica,
Santa Maria Maggiore,
San Domenico, which are in the city centre and the magnificent
Santuario della Madonna di Belvedere, (baroque in style) in a panoramic position above the town, the Belvedere was
the work of Antonio Gabrielli and Nicola Barbioni. The
Hermitage of Buon Riposo,where Saint
Francis stayed alone during his journeys around La Verna. Also worth a visit are the
Benedictine
Abbey of Santa Maria and Sant'Egidio (11th – 12th century) at Badia di Petroia,
The Oratorio of San Crescentino
at Morra with a fresco cycle painted by Signorelli in 1507.
Nature Trail is for nature lovers it is easy to discover the beauty of the whole area
on foot or on horseback.
