CATHEDRAL OF SAN FLORIDO

The Cathedral, built in this design during the Renaissance (on a site previously occupied by an older church dating from 1012), was built to praise Bishop Saint Florido, patron of the town.
The Cathedral shows evidence of distant roman origins and some traces of gothic rebuilding, mainly on the north side, the door, decorated with elegant bas-relieves, is a beautiful testament to this period. This door opens onto the recently restored eighteenth century stairs. The columns are fabulously sculptured with religious symbols.
The Corinthian order temple is Latin-cross shaped, the upper attic is Doric.
The seventeenth century facade facing the Cassero is unfinished, it is joined to Giulio Vitelli's sixteenth century Provostship, just near the eighteenth century Palazzo Della Porta (ex Berioli).
The aisle less interior with cross shaped vaults and lateral chapels, has pure architectural style, according to a typical Florentine Renaissance scheme of the sixteenth century even if the prevalent structure is from the fifteenth century.
The SS Sacramento Chapel, called "Il Cappellone" (The Big Chapel) is accredited to Nicola Barbioni (end of the seventeenth century), coming from the same period as the boxed ceiling and with the same builder as the Cupola, which was damaged by an earthquake and was rebuilt following the designs of Tomasso Catriani at the end of eighteenth. Also notable is the inferior church (second part of XV Century) with recently restored original plastering, the eighteenth century alter, and the tomb of Saint Florido.
The choir stalls are of great beauty' dating from the seventeen century following the designs of , among others' Raffaellino del Colle.
